Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds? +
Yes. They are real diamonds with laboratory origin. They are not naturally mined, so their laboratory-created origin should always be clearly disclosed.
Are lab-grown diamonds fake? +
No. “Fake diamond” usually refers to a different material that only imitates diamond. A lab-grown diamond is diamond, although it was created through technology rather than geological formation.
Are lab-grown diamonds the same as natural diamonds? +

Are lab-grown diamonds the same as moissanite? +

Are lab-grown diamonds the same as cubic zirconia? +
No. Cubic zirconia is a different manufactured material used to imitate diamond. Its composition, hardness, density and optical properties differ from diamond.

Common terms include laboratory-grown diamond, laboratory-created diamond and lab-created diamond. The wording should clearly show that the diamond was not mined.
Can lab-grown diamonds be used in fine jewellery? +

Growth and Identification

How are lab-grown diamonds made? +
They are generally produced by High Pressure High Temperature or Chemical Vapor Deposition. Both processes use a small diamond seed and a carbon source to grow a larger diamond crystal.
What is an HPHT-grown diamond? +
HPHT means High Pressure High Temperature. Carbon dissolves in a molten metallic growth material under intense pressure and heat, then crystallises around a diamond seed.
What is a CVD-grown diamond? +
CVD means Chemical Vapor Deposition. Carbon-containing gas is activated inside a controlled chamber, allowing carbon atoms to deposit on a diamond seed layer by layer.
Is HPHT better than CVD? +
Neither method is automatically better. Both can create attractive or lower-quality diamonds. The individual stone's cut, colour, clarity, proportions and documentation are more important than the growth-method name alone.
How long does it take to grow a diamond? +
The growth stage commonly takes days to several weeks. Timing varies according to the process, equipment, desired size, growth rate and quality target.
Does every lab-grown diamond begin with a diamond seed? +
Gem-quality HPHT and CVD production generally begins with a small piece of diamond that provides the crystal foundation for additional growth.
Can a jeweller identify a lab-grown diamond by sight? +
Not reliably in every case. High-quality lab-grown and natural diamonds can look the same without specialised equipment.
How do gemological laboratories identify laboratory origin? +
Laboratories may examine growth patterns, inclusions, fluorescence, phosphorescence, strain and spectroscopic features using advanced instruments.
Can a standard diamond tester identify laboratory origin? +
A standard tester may confirm diamond-like thermal or electrical behaviour, but it normally cannot reliably determine whether a diamond is natural or laboratory-grown.
Can lab-grown diamonds have inclusions? +
Yes. HPHT diamonds may contain metallic flux or growth-sector features. CVD diamonds may contain dark carbon, layered growth or strain-related features.
Can lab-grown diamonds receive treatment after growth? +

What is the most important C? +
Cut often has the greatest influence on brightness, fire and sparkle. Colour, clarity and carat weight should then be balanced according to budget and visual preference.
Are all lab-grown diamonds flawless? +
No. Laboratory-grown diamonds can contain inclusions, growth patterns, colour zoning and surface characteristics. Quality varies between individual stones.
Are all lab-grown diamonds colourless? +
No. They can range from colourless and near-colourless to stones with visible yellow, brown, grey or other undertones. Fancy-colour lab-grown diamonds are also available.
Do lab-grown diamonds come with grading reports? +
Many do, but not every stone is independently graded. Availability depends on the size, value, seller and product type.
What information can a grading report include? +
A report may include laboratory-grown origin, shape, measurements, carat weight, colour and clarity information, cut or quality assessment, polish, symmetry, fluorescence, report number and possible inscription details.
Does a grading report guarantee value? +
No. It describes the submitted diamond. It does not guarantee future price, resale value, investment performance or identical visual appearance between stones with similar information.
How can I verify a grading report? +
Use the issuing laboratory's official report-verification service and confirm that the report number, measurements and identifying details match the diamond.
What is a laser inscription? +
A microscopic inscription may be placed on the diamond's girdle. It can contain a report number, laboratory-grown disclosure or other identifying information.
Is a higher clarity grade always necessary? +
Not always. Many customers choose a diamond that appears clean without magnification rather than paying for clarity differences that are difficult to see during normal wear.

Do lab-grown diamonds sparkle like mined diamonds? +
